“The star Sirius is seen amongst the constellations in an embedded, original illustration from 1853 (an astronomical observation of the sky drawn while aboard a sailing expedition to Japan). Sirius is our brightest star. I combine this imagery with an old found photograph (featuring three joyful, bright women), bringing together ideas about memory, the passing of time, and the ‘traces’ of what connects us.” ~ Diana Bahr

This artwork features original paper extracted from Observations on the Zodiacal Light, a 705-page publication printed in 1856. The book contains daily illustrations of zodiacal light made by George Jones (a chaplain of the US Navy and amateur astronomer) between 1853-55 while aboard the U.S. steam-frigate Mississippi and its expedition to the China Seas and Japan. Zodiacal light refers to the faint glow of dawn and dusk sunlight that’s been scattered and diffused by cosmic dust.
