ARTIST BIO

Kiyungi Fundikira

Kiyungi Fundikira, a Canadian Tanzanian artist born in August 1969, is a Toronto-based returning painter who has been reviving his skills in watercolours, acrylics, and oil painting over the past two years, following nearly four decades away from the craft—a journey reignited during the first COVID-19 lockdown. Originally a sketch and watercolour artist with a passion for photography, Fundikira began blending his photographic eye with his artwork, creating a unique marriage of his two creative pursuits. His work draws inspiration from African folklore and Canadian biodiversity, resulting in bold, colourful pieces that reflect both his heritage and his lived experience.

He has been featured in interviews with several media outlets, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Metro Morning, Global TV’s Making a Difference with Susan Hay, and a 2021 feature story in the Toronto Star by Gilbert Ngabo.

He was also featured in the award-winning 2023 short documentary Missing Canvas by Miguel Barrera, which detailed the revival of his dormant artistic talents. Most recently, in 2025, he took part in the Black History Month gallery hosted by the Halton Black History Awareness Society at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre in Oakville, ON.
