ARTIST BIO
Kate Taylor
Kate Taylor was born in Cambridge, England, and now works out of her studio, Art Alchemy East, in Toronto, Ontario…. except in the summer, when she moves to her cottage studio in Northern Ontario. Kate has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Western University where she was taught painting by the internationally-renowned artist, Paterson Ewen. She comes from a family of professional artists – her sister, Helen Utsal has a studio on Vancouver Island and her Grandmother, Salme Utsal was an artist originally from Estonia, with work in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
She creates joyful, nature-inspired works rooted in the sensory experience of time spent at the cottage, where the sounds of water, wind, and forest foster a deep sense of connection. Drawing on the natural balance of movement and stillness, energy and calm, the work reflects these opposing forces through fluid motion and thoughtful composition. Using Baltic birch panels for their connection to growth and renewal, she embraces the wood grain as an active element, layering acrylic paint and vibrant, jewel-toned colour to create off-centre focal points that invite multiple perspectives. An extroverted and collaborative spirit shapes both the creative process and relationships with collectors, with commissions viewed as a shared and evolving dialogue.
