ARTIST BIO

Montina Hussey

Montina Hussey (b.1989) is a Toronto-based artist who graduated with a BFA in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University (2016). Montina’s paintings evoke nostalgic imagery fuzed with contemporary impressionism. She is a true creative entrepreneur who paints public murals, organises art shows, competes in painting competitions, and live paints for charities and galas. Montina is in her home studio, often collaborating with her young son, creating original and commissioned work.

Each painting evolves as a wrestling match between loose, gestural paint and the restraint needed to pull it together into an emotionally charged subject. The varied themes blend and melt into each other within a highly saturated colour palette. Her portraits are full of layers and various mark-making, and her landscapes have been described as The Group of Seven on Acid.

Montina’s paintings explore memory and dreams, each piece is full of overlapping marks of information and sometimes blurred as memory behaves. She pulls from childhood memories, her Metis ancestry, and her family’s mental health history in hopes of resurrecting what’s hard to talk about. Once the history and echos of trauma are made into vibrant, explosive, and joyful works, they become more approachable and ultimately transmute and heal.
